Dermaplaning is essentially another form of exfoliation. With each stroke, you are sloughing off dead skin cells that sit on the surface and the constant exfoliation may aid in keeping wrinkles at bay. After exfoliating with Dermaplaning, the skin is left smoother, and, with continued treatments, fine lines are significantly minimized.

This is a great treatment to offer to clients who are pregnant or nursing who want a deep exfoliation, but are not allowed to use peeling agents on their skin because of the risk that the chemicals will be absorbed into the blood stream, and may be transferred to the foetus or the child.
It is also a first choice for clients who have excess vellus hair on the skin. This hair often causes a build-up of dirt and oils in the follicles, so removing the hair gives the client healthier looking skin.
Removing epidermal skin also allows products to penetrate more readily into the deeper layers. Many aestheticians recommend this treatment to prepare the skin for other procedures such as laser treatments or deep chemical peels.
Dermaplaning is most often used on clients with rough, dry skin, superficial hyperpigmentation, mild acne scarring, or fine lines and wrinkles. The treatment results in a more refined, smooth, “glowing” appearance.
Although merely an old wives’ tale, many patients are often concerned that the hair will grow back heavier and darker after Dermaplaning. This is not the case. As long as the hair is superficial vellus hair, it will grow back at the same rate and texture as before the treatment. Any thicker, darker terminal hair should be waxed/tweezed before planning.
Dermaplaning is performed on the face only. We do not plane the eyelids.
Dermaplaning can be performed every 4-6 weeks for maintenance and proper skin exfoliation. For correction of acne scars, fine lines and wrinkles, and skin rejuvenation purposes, it may be performed at a closer interval.
It is recommended that you patch test any new clients who have hypersensitive or allergic skin types to avoid the possibility of a reaction to the treatment.
To do a patch test:
• Clean a patch of skin near the jawline and pat dry
• Dermaplan a small area
• Testing time is 24 to 48 hours and if there are any reactions within this time, will show the client is not suitable for the treatment
• Advise client to contact you if there is any sign of a skin reaction
Dermaplaning is a painless procedure and can be compared to the sensation of shaving legs, but in this case, it’s on the face.
First, the therapist will cleanse and thoroughly dry the skin. Next, they will pull an area of the skin taut with one hand, and hold a sterile 10-gauge blade at a 45-degree angle in the other hand and use short, swift strokes to scrape off dead skin cells and peach fuzz.
There is no downtime associated with this procedure. The client needs to be educated about the importance of using sunscreen to reduce the chance of hyperpigmentation.
Clients may have some redness for a while. Some peeling may occur if the treatment has been followed by an exfoliating peel. You could have add-ons to treatment who do suffer redness such as a cooling, hydrating mask or facial.

Clients taking prescription medication for acne (such as Roaccutane)
Infectious/contagious diseases
Undiagnosed lumps/swellings
Conditions that need to be treated with caution
• Hypersensitive skin (do a patch test)
• Clients on steroid medication
• Clients allergic to nickel or stainless steel (do patch test)
• Widespread acne
• Severe eczema/psoriasis on face
Conditions that could restrict
• Eczema/psoriasis on the face
• Scar tissue <3 months old
• Sunburn
• Clients on steroid based medication: patch test
Possible Contradictions
Slight redness/tingling but will subside within a few hours
• Use sun protection during the day, regardless of the weather
• Do not have any other facial treatments whilst undergoing your treatment course
• Do not use any exfoliating products for at least one week after the final professional treatment
• Do not have any sunbeds in the next 7 days
